HealthRight Awards

Individuals and organisations who have made contributions to improving the physical health of people with mental illness were officially recognised at the HealthRight Recognition and Awards event on 11th September 2008, at the UWA School of Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, Community, Culture and Mental Health Unit,16 The Terrace, Fremantle.

Most outstanding HealthRight organisation and individual received a Massage voucher from Walking on Clouds.

There were two winning categories and a special commendation made.

Award Winners: Subiaco Rehabilitation Service, Derek Horlin; Margaret Cook

 

1. Individual Champion Award:  Derek Horlin

Over a two year period, Derek has made a remarkable contribution to the lives of the people he has supported. For example he has linked clients to GPs and ensured that they have had blood checks, BMI measurements, on-referral to allied health professionals such as dieticians, physiotherapists, dentists and podiatrists.  He has linked people with community organisations such as local gyms and has helped them to source funding for gym memberships. He has regularly attended local consumer advisory group meetings and has helped people supported by him to attend training programs and find jobs. He has developed working relationships with a number of local organisations where he provides information about peer support work and passes on the healthy lifestyles mesage

2. HealthRight Organisation Award: Subiaco Rehabilitation Service

Since 2005 Subiaco Rehabilitation Services have introduced a number of health-promoting groups for their clients. These include: a weight management group, badminton and table tennis groups, Curves gym group, golf group, Fresh Start (quit smoking group), swimming group, out and about social group, cooking classes. The Occupational Therapists set goals with individual clients and these are reviewed and monitored. Results are measured and staff work hard to model healthy behaviours for their clients (eg. eating healthy food, walking and exercising and quitting smoking).

3. Special Commendation: Margaret Cook

Margaret was recognised for her on-going involvement in the HealthRight project. She was a member of the original advisory group which set up this project and has tirelessly worked to improve the health of people with mental illness. She still researches and shares her knowledge and ideas to maintain the project impetus.
