The Facts:

  • People with mental illness (PWMI) in Western Australia are 2.5x more likely to die from a physical illness than the general population.
  • 43% of WA people with a diagnosable mental illness smoke, compared to 24% of those who do not have a mental illness.
  • Nutritional deficiencies, obesity and diabetes are major problems for PWMI
  • PWMI are more likely to engage in high risk behaviour such as smoking, alcohol or drug abuse.
  • PWMI are less likely to engage in health-promoting activities such as good diet and exercise.

The 2007 -2008 Healthy Body Healthy Mind healthy lifestyle campaign aimed to increase awareness of the SNAP into health factors. (Smoking; Nutrition; Alcohol and other Drugs; and Physical Activity). The Healthway funded initiative involved social marketing, innovative health resources and education strategies to encourage people to try healthy behaviours. 5 ways to look after your physical health

Control Smoking: Reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke per day and aim to QUIT.
